Speech Title: Real-Time AI Companions for Immersive AR/VR: From LLMs to AI VTubers over Future Networks
Dr. Kuan-Ting Lai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at National Taipei University of Technology. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Computer Science and Ph.D. from National Taiwan University. His career spans both academia and industry, from his early work as a video ASIC engineer at Quanta Computer to leadership roles in startups, including serving as VP of Technology at Arkados Group and co-founding the wireless charging startup AnyCharge. During his doctoral research, Dr. Lai was a visiting scholar at Columbia University, where he collaborated with IBM T. J. Watson Research Center on large-scale video event detection.
Dr. Lai's latest research focuses on autonomous unmanned systems, computer vision, and digital twin learning for AI-driven systems. He is the creator of AI Wings, the first open-source 5G multi-drone control platform, and has led award-winning student projects, including the ACM Multimedia Best Open-Source Software Award. Dr. Lai actively collaborates with industry to translate AI research into practical systems. He partnered with ELAN Electronics to commercialize an ADAS system using VR-augmented AI training. His recent industry collaborations also include cooperation with TSMC, Infineon, and embodied AI and VLA-based drone technologies with ITRI. His broader research vision is to combine autonomous unmanned vehicles, digital twins, and real-time AI agents to build deployable intelligent systems for future robotics and emerging applications.
